This first episode was amazingly well produced! Now I’m just waiting for episode two!

Congrats on an excellent podcast! I’m sure all the work put into the next one will be worth it!

Here’s some more exclamations, just in case I haven’t met the quota:

Just wanted to chime in as well and comment on the great first show!

I just wanted to say that listening to the first episode actually made me reconsider my opinion towards print media slowly fading out. I was never a big EGM fan, honestly, but hearing the coemmnts of the former editors and contributors helped me to realize what we all lose when a major magazine or newspaper shuts down: a tangible archive of not just criticism and opinion but documentation of history. Just because EGM wasn’t covering the Middle East or the stock market doesn’t mean the material they did feature deserves to be lost.

@feitclub: Super nice comment. Thanks.

Kudos, Robert. Excellent episode. I hesitate to even call this a ‘podcast’. It’s something more focused, more thought-out, and consequently more poignant. Keep up the good work.

This is excellent, you have managed to combine two of my favorite things:unique video game coverage and This American Life. I hope you are able to keep pumping out great material like this.
Godspeed Mr. Ashley!!!!

But for real, not that crazy. Enjoy!

Ok the game mentioned that had a horrible cover, Carnage rally or karnage rally or whatever. Anyone have a link to the cover? I’m dying to see it.

No, it’s not a podcast at all. It is a piece of art. Cheers!

Really incredible. I loved EGM. Subscriber for nearly a decade, and their demise broke my heart even if their glory days were long past

Too bad EGM just resurrected.

I can remember when i was a kid, every trip to the mall i would beg my parents to take me to the book store so i could look at all the cool videogame magazines. EGM was my favorite…

Oh my god, I can clearly remember the Carnage Rally cover without even looking at it.

Seanbaby rules.

just had to ask, cause I am old and fried but where is the music at 11:48 from?

please help I am losing my mind

Posted by mark September 9, 2009 at 5:08 PM

@Mark: That’s the wurli track from an unfinished I Come to Shanghai song. Never really made it much beyond that part. I only use music made by myself or my band.

Posted by Robert Ashley September 9, 2009 at 6:11 PM

could have sworn I heard the melody before, have you used it in other than alww?

Posted by mark September 9, 2009 at 7:29 PM

@Mark: Yeah, I think it’s been in every episode.

Finally got around to listening to this, Robert. (Don’t hate me!) Totally blown away. I had super high expectations for this, so I procrastinated a while, but you seriously nailed it.

Really sad to hear old pals, many of whom no longer live here as a result, talk about the demise of EGM. Made me teary.

I really like this. It feels like watching an old documentary but on something I’m actually interested in, keep up the good work.

Posted by aburnflags November 27, 2009 at 9:08 PM

this is incredible. it feels like someone is reading a games magazine to me and the colors and the design and pictures are music and sound effects.

Posted by alex December 18, 2009 at 1:32 AM

I listened to the episodes sort of in chrono-reverse and loved all of them. Well-researched plus a deep human element of the field. Please don’t let the background music force its way in front of the spoken bits, as – like in other well/wasted casts – it sometimes gets a bit tough to hear the talk above the music.

The death of gaming print magazines comes as no surprise, as it correlates with the sorry state of depth in game releases now. I laughed at the stories the staff told and was moved too (as most of your listeners probably likewise can relate to these on some personal note). Will miss good print writing and the pace of those times.
